- KSMH is a national organization with a membership of 700,000 parents of persons with
- Intellectual disabilities, family members and adults with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the organization has an institutional membership of 1200 special schools and units for persons with intellectual disabilities. 38 small homes and private schools for persons with intellectual disabilities are registered as institutional members. The countrywide membership of parents and adults is reached through a net work of community-based parents support groups in each and every district. Professionals in the area work as a multidisciplinary team of specialists from the national level to the grassroots.
- For four decades, KSMH has remained a means of expression the premier voice of people with intellectual disabilities and their families in Kenya. They have expressed themselves - their dreams and their challenges – through KSMH.
- The priority areas for KSMH are the identification, acceptance and inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities into their families and communities as equals, with their diversities, special needs and human rights respected and supported.
- KSMH has attained national and international recognition as a reputable organization of Kenyans with intellectual disabilities and their families over the years. The organization works with reputable corporate organizations, faith-based organizations, local and international development partners and others in promoting identification, acceptance, inclusion, human rights, equality and opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities and their families
