Persons with intellectual disabilities need a lot of care, right after they are born to the end of their lives. This quality and extent of this care and support will largely determine how the persons with intellectual disabilities will blend in with the family and community. Unfortunately this type of support and care is not available in the country and the provider of these services, i.e. the government, has neglected this area almost completely.
KSMH has developed model programmes to show that such programmes are practical and can really improve lives of persons with intellectual disabilities. Its Carers Programme that was started through a fund-raising walk provided six families with monthly support to employ a person to care for the person with intellectual disabilities. This programme empowered the family in a big way – the parents were now free to go out and earn a living. The families are closely monitored to see that the money given to the family on monthly basis is used for the intended purposes and to record the progress of the person with intellectual disabilities and the family as a whole.
