Right to Free Expression and Free Choice |

Persons with intellectual disabilities CAN express themselves. They communicate in their own language – alternative and augmentative communications. What happens most of the time is that other people do not listen. They need supported listening. And when we listen, they have a lot to say. They can make their own free choices. Therefore there is no case for guardianship. Persons with intellectual disabilities do not want other people to talk for them. All they want is support – support in expressing themselves and support in making choices. And those choices must be respected. If an adult does not want to take medicines that have unpleasant side-effects he has every right to refuse.
KSMH has made great strides in the training of human readers. Human readers are people providing support to a person with intellectual disabilities. KSMH trains them so that they do not substitute their decisions with that of the person with intellectual disability. The human readers are trained in ethical and responsible behaviour and the extent of their responsibilities. This training makes for better communications resulting in free expression and free choice.
