Right to Support Services (Medical and Social Security)It has long been accepted that generally all persons with disabilities need support and assistance. The persons with intellectual disabilities need continuous support all the time day and night. There are two critical areas of support that will determine the quality of life of persons with intellectual disabilities – they need medical/therapeutic support and social security because their lives are highly dependent on their caregivers i.e. family.
KSMH brought all specialists in the area of intellectual disabilities in one place in its on-going programme of continued assessment and therapeutic support. Under this programme, KSMH offers services of educations psychologist, neurologist, EEG services, physiotherapy, speech therapy, nutrition advice, counselling services for parents and some pharmacy support to persons with intellectual disabilities and their parents. This is an on-going successful programme that is really appreciated by parents.
KSMH has a major current campaign where it has petitioned the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Services (MGCSS) to implement the social protection programme for the persons with intellectual disabilities. Although the funds for such a pilot programme were allocated way back in 2009, the Ministry has dragged its feet not knowing how to implement this programme. KSMH has offered specialist services time and time again. Parents have had several meetings with the Permanent Secretary and other officials of the Ministry. Everything has been to no avail. This campaign will carry on till the social protection rights are realized by persons with intellectual disabilities.
