When parents discover that they have an abnormal child, they undergo quite a trauma. They do not know where to turn to and what to do. Once the doctor has diagnosed intellectual disability, they are highly stigmatized. They need counseling and help as to how to manage the disability of their children.

KSMH works in this area of providing support services to the parents. Parents are counseled and individualized programs for the intellectually disabled child are drawn up and put in practice. Parents are taught that intellectual disability is like any other disability and it is not a curse. These support services are extremely useful to parents and result in better care and protection of the intellectually disabled.

Counseling of parents is a continuous process. Pictures show parents receiving help at Kenya Society for the Intellectually Handicapped offices in Nairobi. The services are also available in most provinces of Kenya.
